The November book of the month is 1491: New Revelations of the Americas Before Columbus by Charles C. Mann. This book seems to be timed appropriately for the U.S. Thanksgiving holiday. We shall see what everyone thinks about Columbus and the New ...

I just assumed Kiki was really busy over the summer and hadn't had time to do much with the book club. I also thought (was hoping) she was trying to get us a discussion with Michio Kaku. Yeah. Someone should ask Kiki what is going on.

Daniel Tammet, the autistic savant that sees numbers as shapes, has a book out called Born On A Blue Day: Inside the Extraordinary Mind of an Autistic Savant. It sounds interesting to me. I'm not sure if it should go under this category or another.

I'll vote for Warped Passages because I got a brain cramp half-way through the first time I read it and didn't finish it. Otherwise Black Hole Wars or Physics of the Impossible.

About Me

I work in the clinical laboratory science field. When you go to the doctor and get blood drawn they give it to someone like me to test it. I mostly work in Automated Chemistry and Hematology. I love anything science related and devour science magazines. I just wish I had enough time to read even more of them than I do now. I hope I can keep up with the reading list on the book club. My profile pic makes me look absolutely ridiculous. That's why I picked it. I love that photo. I don't really think I am a pirate. I just like their lifestyle. I study Scottish Gaelic in my spare time but I am really bad at it and have no one to talk to in it. I find philology/etymology fascinating and read books about it when I find them. I'm married to a wonderful woman named Nichole and as of February 7th, 2009 I am the proud papa of a baby girl named Arwen.

Your Inner Fish by Neil Shubin

This was a great book. I finished it in only 3 days which is quick for me. The illustrations are wonderful and give a good beginning grasp on the concept that the structures in the bodies of multicellular organisms are just variations on a theme. I'd like to learn more about embryonic development and I may look up some of his sources in the references section at the end of the book to learn more of the details. I'm specifically interested in vision development and opsin gene expression. I also w… Continue

Quantum Mechanics Joke

I was reading Parallel Worlds today and it reminded me of a joke I had heard on the radio a year or so ago. More of a riddle really.

What is the difference between an auto mechanic and a quantum mechanic?

A quantum mechanic can park his car in the garage without opening the door.

I thought it was funny.
